What Is a Rosin Press?

Although rosin is a relatively new product in the concentrate world, it is progressing at a rapid pace when it comes to quality and popularity. This is undoubtedly due to advancements made in rosin press technology and the evolving techniques surrounding its production. Once a product created from hair straighteners and tortilla presses, rosin has come a long way, now created commercially using refined processes and precisely crafted pneumatic and hydraulic presses.

If you're unfamiliar, a rosin press machine is essentially anything used to extract cannabinoids through heat and pressure. Typically speaking, a rosin press has two heated plates that are pressed down onto each other to create enough force to facilitate an extraction. There's much more that goes into a quality rosin press though. And with more and more innovation in rosin press engineering, the quality of a rosin press has never been more important.

Advancements in rosin press technology have allowed for new and exciting non-solvent products to enter the market, peaking consumer interest in rosin. With rosin now rivaling hydrocarbon extracts in terpene content and potency, it's no wonder why more and more people are making the investment in a quality rosin press machine.

How Rosin Tech Works?

To produce rosin, three components are required: heat, pressure, and time. The technique in rosin production rests within the ability to balance these three components together to create a superior product in flavor and effect.

When extracting rosin, heat must be controlled in order to preserve terpenes and cannabinoids. High temperatures have the ability to rapidly degrade these molecules, creating a bland and inferior final product. This is why producing rosin at the lowest temperature possible is paramount. Limiting the time exposed to high heat can retain some terpenes; however, reducing heat is the only way to ensure the least degradation possible.

In order to reduce heat, pressure must be increased. High pressures have the ability to create a final product with much less of a compromise to the original terpene profile. The measure of a highly effective rosin press is its ability to provide enough pressure so that heat may be lowered to a point where minimal degradation can take place.

WHAT'S A 'GOOD' YIELD?

The goal of pressing rosin is to get all the cannabinoids and terpenes out of the trichome glands. Theoretically, if your cannabis has 18% cannabinoids and 2% terpenes, the yield you'd get from pressing 1 gram of flower would be 0.2 grams of rosin. Of course, a lot of factors contribute to the overall output and quality of your rosin.

If you don't feel like you got everything out of your first run, you can always grab new parchment paper and press the cannabis again. Increasing the temperature or pressure on your second run will ensure you get every last bit of oil out of your product.

Keep in mind that when you're pressing nugs to make rosin, you're squeezing the plant matter. Under imperfect conditions, that plant matter can make its way into your final product, but that doesn't mean your product is bad.

Rosin is commonly judged by a 6-star rating system used to judge all solventless concentrates. Your rosin should bubble when exposed to heat. Any plant particulates or impurities will reduce the amount of bubbling, which correlates to the star rating: 1-2 being the lowest and 6 being the highest - and the most difficult to produce. While it's true that the higher the star, the better the dab, a little plant material in your rosin isn't going to be a deal breaker.
